Video to GIF

Turn a few seconds of a video into a GIF. Pick a start, a length and a size; the file never leaves your device.

MP4 · MOV · WebM · MKV — Your file is never uploaded; it is processed on this device only. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits.

How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Press “Choose a video file” and pick the video.
  2. Pause the preview on the scene you want, press “Use current position as start”, then type a length in seconds. Up to 15 seconds.
  3. Choose a width and frames per second, then press “Make GIF”.
  4. Check the finished GIF and save it with the download button.

Choosing size and frame rate

GIF is an old picture format, so the same scene takes far more space than an MP4 video. Three things decide the size: width, frames per second and length. For a GIF to post in a chat or a forum, start with 320px wide, 10 frames per second, 3 to 5 seconds. That usually lands within a few megabytes.

A GIF can hold only 256 colors per frame, so scenes with soft color changes such as a sunset or skin can show bands. This tool picks a fresh set of the best 256 colors for every frame to reduce that loss. GIFs do not carry sound.

What it is good for

Good to know

For a single still picture, Save a frame is sharper and lighter. For anything longer than 15 seconds, or when you need sound, making a short video with Trim video gives both a smaller file and better quality than a GIF.

How the GIF is built

After you press “Make GIF” you can watch the preview step through the scene one frame at a time. At 10 frames per second for 3 seconds, it reads 30 frames 0.1 seconds apart, shrinks each to the chosen width, reduces it to 256 colors and stacks them. Each frame is taken at its exact time rather than captured while playing, so the GIF runs at the original speed even on a slow computer. The finished GIF loops forever. Screen recordings where little changes come out small; footage with a constantly moving camera comes out much larger at the same settings.

FAQ

My GIF is too large.

Lower the width to 240–320px, the frame rate to 8–10 and shorten the length. All three reduce the size directly.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds at a time. For longer sections a short video works better.

Is there a watermark?

No. There is no watermark, sign-up or usage limit.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Frames are read and encoded inside your browser and the file never leaves your device.
